The Knolls Special Recreation Management Area is comprised of almost 36,000 acres of hills, sand dunes and mud flats on the Great Salt Lake Desert about 80 miles west of Salt Lake City off of Exit 41 on the I-80. It's a great place for an OHV/ATV playground but stay on the property: there's a military bomber training range just over the fence to the south. The camping is primitive (vault toilets but no water, no picnic tables and no fire rings - if you need a fire, bring your own fire pan). No target shooting, no glass containers outside your vehicle, and pack it in, pack it out (there's no trash collection). |
Knolls SRMA is open year round and, while trailers get in free, the camping/day use $6 fee per passenger vehicle, tow vehicle and self-contained RV is always collected. If you go into the BLM Salt Lake Field Office, you can get an annual use permit for $40. |
