Schweitzer Mountain Resort is located in the northern Idaho panhandle about 11 miles northwest of Sandpoint. 2 very large bowls with 2 smaller bowls inside of each, Schweitzer offers steep, challenging terrain at the top with intermediate terrain just below. 2 of the lifts going to the top allow midway loading and unloading for those who want the steeps or want to avoid the steeps. Because there are several ridges and roads that provide an easy way down, even advanced beginners can take the ride all the way up and take advantage of some good, long runs coming down. Long mogul runs, steep chutes, long intermediate cruisers, wide open bowls, gladed tree runs, and a full-time half-pipe make for some different choices for skiers and boarders. The base area offers a lodge with 82 rooms: suites, Jacuzzi's and efficiency kitchenettes, about 50 condo units for rent and nearby Sandpoint has quite a few hotels, motels and bed and breakfasts. The scenery here is similar to Lake Tahoe but the towns are smaller and more comfortable, and the folks are friendlier. |
