Lincoln County is in south central New Mexico. This is the country of Pat Garrett and Billy the Kid, and the famous Lincoln County War. This is also where Smokey Bear came from. Named in honor of President Abraham Lincoln, Lincoln County was formed in 1869. At that time, it was the largest county in the United States. Today, Lincoln County contains 4,831 square miles of land and almost no surface water. The county seat is Carrizozo.
