The Colorado State Line to Moab, Utah Area
of the Colorado River

Colorado River

The photos here are from the Colorado State Line-to-Moab area, just east of Moab, Utah. We went there with some friends from Salt Lake City. They knew the river well and were going to take us rafting.

First night we camped out in a side canyon, away from the highway and river. Next morning we went to Moab early and rented our gear. We were out on the river by 10.

For the first couple of hours we were just drifting through fairyland: red rock slopes and cliffs rising in all directions. We ate lunch on the water, watched the birds, enjoyed the regular changes in the rocks rising above us. Another couple hours and the river started to show some action.

Suddenly our friends in the canoe started yelling at us to follow them and then they rolled over. It was too late for us to change direction. We got pulled into a washing machine: a hole in the river bed where we were alternately thrust up and down in the water. Finally, I sprang straight off the bottom, grabbed my wife and pulled us free of the action. We had a big laugh but that was the end of our day on the raft. Our friends found it a couple miles downstream and hauled it back to the car we had left near there that morning. That's also why I don't have any photos from on the river. But it was a great time.
