Mt. Sherman

Mt. Sherman is one of Colorado's famous fourteeners. That means (depending on your level of physical fitness), the trails on this mountain may be rated as easy, moderate or difficult to impossible. Because of the popularity of Colorado's 14ers, the trails may be under heavy assault in all seasons.

Elevations:

• Trail beginning: 11,240'
• High Point: 14,036'
• Trail ending: 14,036'

Access: Go south from Fairplay on US 285 for about 1 mile. Turn west on Fourmile Creek Road (County Road 18) and go almost 11 miles to the ruins at the Leavick town site. 2WD vehicles should stop here, 4WD vehicles with high clearance can go an additonal 2.5 miles to 12,520'.

Notes: The most popular trail on Sherman starts at the Fourmile Creek Trailhead. Follow the 4WD road northwest into the upper basin of Fourmile Creek. Get past the old Hilltop and Dauntless Mines and head for the 13,140' saddle between Sherman (to the northeast) and 13,748' Mount Sheridan (to the southwest). Once at the saddle, follow a good trail for 0.9 miles up Sherman's southwest ridge to the summit. From the Fourmile Creek Trailhead, this is an 8 mile round trip.
