Jefferson Loop Trail #643

The Jefferson Loop Trail is 5.5 miles of moderately difficult hiking in the eastern foothills of the TenMile Range. This trail sees most of its use in the summer and fall.

Elevations:

• Trail beginning: 10,000'
• High Point: 11,600'
• Trail ending: 11,600'

Access: Best access point for backpackers is at the Jefferson Creek Campground. In Jefferson turn off of US 285 and head northwest on County Road 35 to County Road 37 to Jefferson Creek Campground. There is backpacker parking at the entrance to the campground. Enter the campground on the closed road next to the pay station and go north for 2 miles. At a stream crossing the road turns into the trail.

Notes: The trail climbs steadily through the Jefferson Creek drainage toward the Continental Divide before turning west and going up a couple of switchbacks onto the ridge where it meets with the Colorado Trail. The Colorado Trail descends the ridge to the Beaver Ponds Picnic Area where you can turn left and head about 1/2 mile back up to the Jefferson Creek Campground and get into your vehicle again.
