Hankins Pass Trail #630

This 6.5 mile trail across the Lost Creek Wilderness is rated as more difficult (although east of Hankins Pass the trail is "moderate"). It sees nearly all its traffic in summer and fall.

    Elevations:
  • Trail beginning: 8,200' (at Goose Creek Trail junction)
  • High Point: 10,000'
  • Trail ending: 8,960' (at Brookside - McCurdy Trail junction)

Access: The Hankins Pass Trail is a connector between the Goose Creek Trail on the east and the Brookside - McCurdyTrail on the west. Hankins Pass Trail crosses the southern part of the Lost Creek Wilderness.

Notes: The Hankins Pass Trail intersects with the Brookside-McCurdy Trail, McCurdy Park Trail, Goose Creek Trail, Lake Park Trail and Lizard Rock Trail. The trail is entirely within the Lost Creek Wilderness so wilderness rules and regs apply.

Between the Goose Creek Trail junction and Hankins Pass (at the top of the Tarryall's) there are some good campsites, but once you cross Hankins Pass, the trail gradient is too steep for good camping along the way.

Coming from the east (Goose Creek Trailhead off of FR 211), you'll first cross a footbridge over Hankins Gulch. Just over the footbridge, the Goose Creek Trail heads right and the Hankins Pass Trail heads left, climbing slowly through a forested valley into a zone of open meadows surrounded by aspen groves. At the summit of Hankins Pass is the junction with the Lake Park Trail. Across the Pass, the Hankins Pass Trail drops steeply to the wilderness boundary and the junction with the Lizard Rock Trail (which heads south to the Spruce Grove Campground). Hankins Pass Trail continues its descent to the northwest and ends at the junction with Brookside - McCurdy. Heading south from this junction will bring you to the Twin Eagles Trailhead.
