Captain Mountain Trail #46

The Captain Mountain Trail is about 7 miles long (one way) and is rated as More Difficult.

    Elevations:
  • Trailhead: 9,050'
  • Destination: 10,600'

Trailhead Location: From Evergreen, take the Upper Bear Creek Road for 10 miles to the Mount Evans State Wildlife Area. Continue another three miles to the Bear Creek Guard Station where the trailhead will be on the right. Or, start at the Echo Lake Campground at the Hwy 103 / Hwy 5 junction.

From the Bear Creek Guard Station, the trail gradually climbs through lodgepole pine and aspen forest. It skirts the bottom of the 9,869 foot Captain Mountain before meandering through a series of open meadows. The end of the trail is a steady climb through thick spruce and fir woods, up the canyon of Beaverdam Creek, and finally emerges at the Echo Lake Campground.
