Ghost of the Coyote Trail is 16 miles long and rated as difficult. It sees light use from early spring to early winter. Elevation: 6,200' to 6,000' Ghost of the Coyote follows parts of old logging trails through stands of Utah and alligator juniper, and displays of yucca, agave and many wildflowers. There are some great vista points along the way and you may come across javelina, mountain lion and wild turkey. You may also come across several sites frequented by ancient indigenous peoples. There are pottery shards, stone tools and the foundations of pre-historic dwellings. Federal law prohibits the excavation or removal of artifacts from these areas so be careful to not disturb anything. Access: Go west from Show Low Post Office on State Road 260 for 8.1 miles. At the Burton road turn right and go 1.1 miles north. The trailhead is just past the cattle guard on the left. USGS Maps: 234 SW, Pinedale |
