Well, I skipped up the road a bit. There's a granite dike in the middle of this photo with some Ponderosas growing out of it. In the canyon on the other side of that dike is where the tunnel was. But notice that this granite just flows and bends and angles in all different directions. And at this elevation there's lots of large vegetation growing straight out of the rock: Ponderosa pines, piñons, cedars... the cottonwoods in the foreground are rising out of the streambed again because that granite dike that croses the photo restricts the surface water flow into the canyon below. As the road I'm following runs right beside the streambed, you can see that it turns and twists all over the place in its journey through Phantom Canyon. |
