The Alpine Loop Back Country Byway
4WD Sign to Engineer Pass

After passing the 4WD Sign, the road became an inexorable climb through long straight stretches ending in switchback after switchback until I finally came up on the top of the top ridge, turned the last switchback and parked by the Engineer Pass sign. The views were great with no trees in the way. Someone had driven a D-8 through here to clear the worst of the snow from the road, but I'll bet that blade never touched the ground anywhere in its journey.

Near the top I got out and started trying to pick out which mountains were which in the distance, then at the summit I found signs indicating explicitly which were which. (For the western views, go to the next page.)
