Nearly the entire 5.1 miles of the Comanche Trail is within the Sangre de Cristo Wilderness. The hiking is rated as moderate and the trail sees most use in the summer and fall.
Access: Go south from Westcliffe on State Route 69 to Schoolfield Lane (County Road 140). Turn right and go to the Comanche - Venable Trailhead at the end of the road. Notes: This is a beautiful hike into the eastern Sangre de Cristo's. The trail passes the Alvarado Campground and heads up the valley to Comanche Lake. If you go further past Comanche Lake, you'll come up on the main ridge of the Sangres. Turn north and you'll cross the Phantom Terrace just below Venable Peak. At the next trail junction, go right and the Venable Trail will bring you back down to where you left your car. USGS Maps: Horn Peak |
