The beginning and end of the Longwater Trail double as 4WD routes, but the middle 2.5 miles or so are purely for hikers. The trail is used year round and is rated as moderately difficult.
Access: Take the Tarryall Road north from Lake George and go to Forest Road 112. The trailhead is about 1 mile past the Happy Meadows Campground. Notes: The Longwater Trail roughly parallels the Platte River for most of its' journey. When you come to the north end of the trail it will open out into a dirt road that is frequented by 4WD vehicles. Best way back to your vehicle: turn around and retrace your steps. I hear the fishing is pretty good in here... but you'll want to bring your own drinking water. USGS Maps: Hackett Mtn. |
