Horsethief Park Trail is a moderately difficult 4 mile hike (and cross-country ski trail) that gets used all year round.
Access: Go to Divide on US 24 and turn south on State Road 67. 8 miles down you'll come to a tunnel. Parking is available on the south side of the tunnel at the trailhead. Notes: The trail crosses the old Horsethief Park area and rises to a rock formation called the "Pancake Rocks." 1,400 feet of elevation gain in 4 miles, not too bad, but it'll get your heart pumping at this altitude. Camping is allowed at undeveloped sites along the trail but it's "pack it in, pack it out" here. Campfire permits are not required but you'd be taking on tremendous responsibility... and bring your own water. USGS Maps: Cripple Creek North, Pikes Peak |
