From the Ceran Saint Vrain Trailhead to FDR 252 is about 1.9 miles (one way) and sees moderate to heavy use from April through November (open year round) because it is rated as Easiest.
USGS Maps: Raymond and Gold Hill Quads Trailhead Location: From the Peak-to-Peak Highway (Hwy 72) go east on County Road 94 (Overland Rd. or James Canyon Drive) approximately two miles. Turn north (left) a quarter mile on Riverside Drive to the Ceran St. Vrain Trailhead, on the east side of the South St. Vrain Creek. This portion of James Canyon Drive is graded gravel, passable by normal passenger vehicles. From Boulder: Go 5.5 miles north on Highway 36, turn west onto Left Hand Canyon Drive. About five miles up Left Hand Canyon, follow the right fork to Jamestown. Go through Jamestown, continuing over the top of the hill and past the end of the pavement. Ceran St. Vrain Trailhead lies about one-half mile beyond the end of the pavement, a quarter-mile up Riverside Drive, on the north side of James Canyon Drive. This is an easy trail, which gradually loses elevation as it follows the South St. Vrain Creek downstream for 1.9 miles. The trail meets up with National Forest System Road 252, a very rough four-wheel drive road, seldom used by motorized vehicles. It climbs steeply one half mile northwest to a four-way intersection from which it is a steep half mile up to Miller Rock. The Miller Rock Spur cuts off the corner, coming in to the main road southwest of Miller Rock. An unmaintained social trail continues along the creek for several more miles, but be aware that there is no way to exit the canyon other than to retrace your steps back to the trailhead. The section of the maintained trail from the Ceran St. Vrain Trailhead to Miller Rock is becoming increasingly popular with mountain bikers, so watch out for other users. Special Trail Regulations: Dispersed camping is permitted in the area. Please camp at least 200 feet from the trailhead, trail and creek. Pack out all trash. |
