Vilas is located in northern Baca County. This is the Great Plains with lots of wheat and other grains, plus cattle. Vilas is probably here only because there was once a rail siding built here. The Dust Bowl and the Great Depression hit this area so hard it hasn't recovered. The townsite of Vilas covers 1/8th of a square mile. |
