Somerton, Arizona

Somerton was founded in 1898 in the fertile Colorado River Valley about 12 miles south of Yuma. Originally, this area was claimed by the Rancho El Paso de los Algodones Grant but that Land Grant was disallowed by the US Congress. At the same time, Congress passed a law saying that settlers who could prove they were on the property before May 25, 1898, could buy up to 40 acres for themselves for $1.25 per acre.

This is still a major agricultural area with lots of citrus and vegetable farming and processing, but some light industry is starting to move. There is also some commercial development here but there is room for lots more (the folks are tired of having to drive to Yuma for basic services...)
