This trail travels 7 miles from Greer to Gabaldon Campground. It's rated as moderate in difficulty and sees light to moderate usage from May to October. While mountain bikes are okay on this part of the trail, motorized vehicles are not. This trail crosses the West Fork of the Little Colorado right away (and there's no bridge) before rising 600 feet in 1/8 mile to Amberon Point. Once at Amberon, you've passed the worst of it. From Amberon Point, the trail overlooks the Greer Basin as it makes its way the spruce and firs toward Marble Spring. Near Marble Spring you'll come into an area that was logged in 1988. Shortly, you'll be out of the woods and crossing open meadows with small marshy areas (cienegas). You might come across some elk through here before you come to the old railroad grade near Colter Reservoir. Keep track of the posts with the hiker symbol on them, there's old railroad beds and logging trails to make it easy to lose your way. Past Gabaldon Campground, the trail continues as the East Baldy Trail into the Mt. Baldy Wilderness: no mountain bikes, no motorized vehicles, etc. past that wilderness boundary. Elevation: 8,200' to 9,300' Access: Near the end of Forest Service Road 575 in Greer (at Government Springs) is where the trail begins. USGS Maps: 258 SW Greer, 280 NW Big Lake |
