Apache-Sitgreaves National Forest
Grayling Campground

Access: Located in the Big Lake Recreation Area, about 25 miles south of Springerville, on State Road 273.

Elevation: 9,040'

Grayling Campground is open from mid-May through September.

With campsites scattered through the mixed conifer and aspen forest, Grayling Campground offers the most secluded campsites in the Big Lake Complex. Because of the elevation, nighttime temperatures can range from cool to cold. July and August can bring heavy thundershowers.

Big Lake offers lots of fishing, boating, camping, hiking, mountain biking, horseback riding, bird and wildlife watching, and just plain old picnicking opportunities. And the Mt. Baldy Wilderness is pretty close by.

Facilities:

  • 23 units with campfire rings, grills and picnic tables for tents, trailers and motorhomes up to 22 feet long
  • Visitor's Center with scheduled programs
  • Campground hosts on site
  • Flush toilets, drinking water, showers and an RV sanitary dump station
  • Interpretive nature trail, hiking/mountain bicycling trails
  • Boat launch ramps

Other notes:

  • There are no electrical hookups.
  • All pets must be restrained or on a leash.
  • Between mid-October and mid-May the camping is free.
  • Reservations can be made by calling 877-444-6777.
